AJA Announces KONA Version 6.0 Supporting Red Post-Production Workflows

New KONA Software to Add RED-Specific Video Format Outputs

In an effort to optimize support for RED Digital Cinema workflows in post production, AJA Video is adding RED-specific video outputs for some of the unique frame sizes that the REDALERT and REDCINE software applications can produce. This additional support for RED will be included in the version 6.0 software driver for the award-winning KONA 3 video card. The version 6.0 software update will be a free upgrade for KONA 3 users, and will be available for download in late May of 2008.

    Great news!

Curious. Any idea what exactly the implementation is? Almost sounds non-FCP, like it would be playback through AJA-TV or something.

[Itamar Kool] “I was hoping we would finally get support for Premiere Pro….”

Apparently the market for this feature is extremely small or you would have probably seen this by now. I know they showed it at NAB last year, but obviously something has steered the company away from it.

    Here is the dealio…

Yes, Premiere Pro support was announced last year. Well, it was “re-announced” this year and shipping early Q3. This will also include the enhanced Red support.

Most importantly, the new Premiere drivers for Mac will allow you to work in 10-Bit RGB with RT effects. So imagine offlining in FCP and conforming with Premiere with the help of AutoDuck. Quack.

Moreover, AJA will also deliver the ability to use the Kona/Xena in either platform. They are no longer locked to a platform due to a termination of a facockta licensing agreement with an unnamed party. This will also allow for Dual Boot/Bootcamp fun and joy.

Incidentally, Xena will also add DVCProHD support with the 6.0 drivers.

Lastly, AJA threw an incredible party tonight. My ears are still ringing. Great people, great friends, perfect evening.

They always throw a great party. One of the things I’m really bummed about missing. Somebody should take a picture of the entire AJA gang in the booth right about now to see how they look. 🙂

I don’t see any mention of the new drivers supporting Kona 2 on Dual G5. Any word or can we officially mark Kona 2 as EOL.

Seeing as the Kona 3X is a replacement for that unit, probably safe to say Kona 2 will be EOL in the very near future.

Ended at 1:45am when someone pulled the fire alarm in the casino…

It really set a new standard for parties at NAB and everyone was in the booth on time.
