Any info available from Panasonic if the 1080i recording (1440x1080pixels 4:2:2 at 25/50i) of AJ HDX900 is derived direct from ccd block (1280 x720 pixels) or is it processed from the Varicam 720p signal (960×720)?

    Hi Mike:

I’ve been away on vacation for two weeks, thus my apologies for the delay in this resposne.

In the HDX900, the CCDs capture native 720 x 1280, they also have a half pixel horizontal spatial
offset. This full bandwidth “Super 720p” is used as the basis for the record formats on tape.
    Thus for 1080p 25, the tape’s CODEC is 1080 x 1440 for Y, amd 1080 x 720 for R-Y/B-Y, the
camera’s front end provides a pretty good signal for conversion and then subsequent compression.

    Hope it helps,

    Steve Mahrer – Panasonic.

    Hi Steve,

I wondered when offset pixel technique would be be used on pro kit.
Will be very interesting to look at the results at IBC.

Can I read between the lines then that the 900 can create more than 1.1 million pixels (lets call them virtual pixels) at the A-D stage?

If so, is the 1440x 1080 sample taken directly from here or is there only ever a 1280×720 output from the AD?

Getting very difficult to discuss this end of the camera without falling over somewhat inadequate or redundent technical jargon!
Maybe the expression “virtual pixels” has its place?

I do not believe that Panasonic will be at IBC this year.

Maybe not, but they are in Amsterdam at the same time! Here’s my invitation:

“Ladies and Gentlemen of the European Press.

Please find attached an invitation to our Press Conference for this Years IBC.
As I mentioned in my last mail, we will be following the Conference with a big party. We would love you to attend both. ”
