Buddy sent me this link, cutesy interface to cost estimate gigs. I tried various parameters and the prices that come up would be my cost, pre-profit. Or is this just to “start a conversation” with the filmmakers and then there will be upselling? I realize the video buying public now needs everything to be easy, like Angie’s List. Thoughts?

Wow! It came in under our typical project, but not by much. The HUGE variable that can’t be known without a script is number of shoot days and number of set-ups.

It’s interesting, but I’m scratching my head at how they think this can be accurate with only those few generalized questions, especially if you answer “I don’t know” a time or two. There must be quite a few underlying assumptions for it to work at anything like a real estimate.

You can “break” it if you use both the allowed “I don’t know” options and ask for “amazing” or high end options in all other categories.

When I quiz a new client, I have to work thru a lot more than just two “I don’t know”s.

Yes, shoot days are a wild card as is size of crew. I assume these are solo crews? Yet their examples are high end, in no way are they one-man-bands.

In sum, I feel this is just a way to capture the curious prospect’s contact info for a follow up and upsell. I’ve seen it on sites for insurance salesmen, CFP’s, etc. It’s a teaser.

Works for me. Wish they had longer lengths more than 4-5 minutes. Definitely affects edit and animation time.

Came in around our rates less markup.
