  • AfterFX.exe fails to start – cannot find FLT.dll

Posted by Stephen Brooks on April 2, 2008 at 4:30 pm

I have Production Premium CS3. After Effects used to work. All other parts of the suite startup fine. I reinstalled AfterFX and nothing changed. I looked up FLT.dll and it is listed as malware. But my problem is After Effects does not find the dll. Is this dll also a legit part of the suite?

    I forgot to mention:

Gateway FX540b Vista Home Premium. Have not applied SP1 yet.

    Hi Stephen,
I had the same problem under XP Pro SP2. I believe it was created by RegCure which removed the flt.dll file. FTL.dll is a Removal Description library. With it gone, I could not remove or reinstall my original AfterFX CS3. The only solution was to use two programs, Microsoft “Cleanup,” miscuu2.exe and Adobe’s wincs3cean.zip. You do not need to run miscuu2.exe. It is required by Adobe’s wincs3clean to run. Run wincs3clean at least 2 times to make sure all files are removed. Then restart and try to install AfterFX CS3. This fixed the problem for me. The side effect of running wincs3clean is that it uninstalls “ALL” Adobe CS3 programs. I had to install my other CS3 programs but that was necessary to fix the FLT.dll problem.

I hope this helps you. Adobe technical deserves credit for this solution. They were very helpful.

Cliff! Perfect timing. The problem cropped up again last night as I updated Premiere Pro to 8.2.

    Thanks!

FLT.dll seems to go missing on a regular basis for me.

Ive since discovered there is a trojan called flt.dll. I use avg and spybot and am wondering if these are removing the dll. Ive set avg to ignore the aferfx support file. But cant find a way of stopping spy bot.

neither log it if they are deleting it.

    Hi,
I came across the same problem recently so I know how frustrating it could be. My flt.dll went missing and I had to reinstall AfterFX but i run through the same problem over and over again as i turn on my P.C.
So, i resorted to creating a backup file of the original (changing the extension from flt.dll to flt.dll.bak) and i had to put it in the applications folder everytime i launched AfterFX.
Fortunately, I read a post saying that the source of the problem might be “System Mechanic” (if you have it installed of course).
This is an article about how you can prevent System Mechanics from removing your flt.dll:

I hope that this will help fix the problem.
