AfterEffects Comp settings for DV-NTSC Anamoprhic timeline

Hi there,

I’m doing some motion graphics in AE to lay into my FCP DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC setting and I’ve got problems.

When I export my .mov file from AE to FCP, it seems as if my FCP sequence is more “widescreen” than my video. And when I distort the .mov file to make it full framein my canvas, the picture is thrown out of proportion.

My comp settings in AE are what I thought would be compatible with FCP’s DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC timeline:

PRESET: NTSC DV WIDESCREEN
W: 720
H: 480

[lock aspect ratio to 3:2 – checked)

Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2)
[[[ frame aspect ration: 9:5 ]]]

Frame Rate: 29.97
—-

What should my Comp setting in After Effects be set to?

It’s often asked. You do need to manually check the anamorphic column in the item properties for the item in your Browser.

Thanks Tom but I actually already tried that. Maybe I was unclear…

In order to make the .mov from After Effects fit the Anamorphic frame size, I have to distort it width-wise. Stretch it horizontally. Clicking anamorphic does in fact make it wider but to make it fit the canvas.

If I were someone reading this post I would think “Well, your canvas in AE has to be wider…duh” But I don’t know what the settings could be in ae BESIDES what they already are:

NTSV DV Widescreen
720 x 480
D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 1.2
Frame Aspect Ration: 9.5

Thoughts? Tom?

Yeah, that’s what is maddening. It should be coming into my FCP timeline and, after clicking Anamorphic in the Format info window, filling out the frame, the image perfectly proportioned. But no!

Here’s a question, though — In AE, when I have the Comp set to NTSC DV Widescreen, the pixel aspect ratio is D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2). In FCP, When it’s set to DV-NTSC Anamorphic, the pixel aspect ratio is “CCIR 601 / DV 720 X 480”. Are these the same thing?

You are the man. Thanks for taking time to explain this stuff so thoroughly.

And I think you hit the nail on the head. The TOGGLE SWITCH escaped me. I made my graphics without actually ever seeing them for what they really were: SQUASHED.
