I have a couple of suggestions:

– When you have an explosion, try to make the other items in the scene react (i.e., lighten in areas facing the explosion, darken in areas in shadow). This tutorial on the Video Copilot site shows how to do this for a muzzle flash, but the principle is the same for big explosions.

– Color-correct the CG elements like the ship to fit in the scene a bit better; a good way to do this is to put an adjustment over the entire composition as a last step to grade the whole scene together, which naturally makes all elements seem to fit together.
