After Effects plugins removed in 5.1
Posted by Tom Wolsky on March 31, 2006 at 12:02 pmDidn’t anyone notice that support for After Effects plugins has been removed in FCP5.1.
All the best,

Probably because AE is not a universal app. Adobe has stated it will not support a Universal app until the next rev of the app which will most likely be 2007.

March 31, 2006 at 12:59 pmCouldn’t Apple have written some emulator for the plugs? Or would have been a Herculean effort? Let’s hope this is sorted out by the time the Intel towers are shipping. (just had a friend visit who’s up the Intel corp. ladder, & he says the towers are gonna smoke the PowerMacs for performance).

Doubt it. Rosetta is just for full applications. I’m curious to find out if my Boris Continuum plug-ins will work or if Boris will release some sort of update to them. They’re usually very good at getting on new releases very quickly.
Adobe has been very cool to support the new Intel machines and it’s no surprise since they are trying to be the “Apple” of the PC world with their production bundle over there.

There is a post on the Sapphire forum too, so it would be interesting to see what Gen Arts say

March 31, 2006 at 2:57 pmI’m just praying that when FCP gets a Universal AE interface (API), it will be of a more recent version that can also support at least 16-bit output. Isn’t the current AE API from a really early version of AE?

Y’know, if Adobe was smart, they’d ALSO include an FCP-only plugin: “Export to After Effects”, which would do many — if not all — of the things that Automatic Duck does.”You just export an XML from FCP which it does natively. You need the Pro Import plug-in for After Effects to bring that into AE.
So you really need Adobe to make an FCP Import Plug-in. But why in the world would they do that when Wes has already done that and it’s worth every penny Wes charges. Seems rather redundant in my book and I’m sure it would never work as well as what Wes has created.

If the use of AE was limited to big shops with lots of big jobs, I’d agree… but it isn’t.”I’m just a two man shop here and I’ve had the Duck for years. I use AE for all manner of jobs from freebie’s to broadcast.
[Dave LaRonde] “There are far more places where struggling editors have to throw nickels around like they were manhole covers, and they have to ask themselves, “Should I spend the extra money to get AE AND the Duck when Motion now comes bundled with FCP?””
If they don’t need the Duck, then don’t buy it. Motion can do a lot of the things AE can do, not all, but a lot. I use AE all the time for the 3D camera moves.
If you can’t afford the duck, there are plenty of workarounds. But if you’re making a living doing this, then the cost of the duck should be fully paid for in one or two jobs most.
