  • After Effects + Mocha – face replacement problem

Posted by Agnieszka Sosen on March 4, 2012 at 3:27 pm

    Hello,
I’m doing a face replacement task in After Effects CS5.5 and Mocha plugin. I’m following the

    tutorial by Lesterbanks:
    https://lesterbanks.com/2011/06/face-replacement-using-after-effects-mocha/

I’m trying to replace the face of the guy from the movie with my own face.
I have the layers as in the tutorial: bg (the movie with the guy) face (vid with my own face)

and track which is copied info (mapped face) from Mocha plugin.

I do all the steps as in the tutorial but in the end my face does not follow the face of the guy

(his face moves a bit and there is a slight zoom following – my face should also grow bigger as

the zoom takes place, but it stays the same size as in the beginning).

Here are screens how does it look on my PC:

    https://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8934/58871993.jpg

So, as you see on the second screen, the face doesn’t follow the actor in the correct way.

I think I did everything the same as in the tutorial, so I have no idea why this is not working.

I need help in detecting what went wrong here.

Thank you very much in advance.

It seems that you did not tick the scale parameter in the mocha track. I don’t see any keyframes in your AE comp.

It is not the problem with the scale parameter – I ticked it and pasted the whole tracking data from Mocha for both the guy’s face and my face.

I pasted them again to make sure and it still doesn’t work.

You may need to delete the anchor point keyframes.

    Thanks for the contact.

Could it be the case that the when 2 videos have different dimensions/resolution/fps they don’t work properly together?

Ok, I located the source of the problem – I had to time stretch the layer with the pasted mapped data from Mocha.
The face didn’t follow the actor fast enough (it was lagging behind), so I changed the ‘stretch’ parameter from 100% to around 40% and it matched the movement appropriately.

Although, I don’t have the idea why I had to change the stretch – the tutorial didn’t mention it. Could the fps be the source of this? (the movies both have 25 fps, but the mapping in Mocha was done in 10fps)

Yes – this is the issue. mocha and AE project frame rate and image dimensions “always” have to match to insure the data lines up properly.

    Ross
