  • After Effects CS3 opengl not working! 9800MAC G5 OSX10.5.3

Okay so I have been using the ****** video card that came with my computer, I did my research and found that after effects CS3 said a radeon 9800 MAC would work in openGL. The card says it is compatable with opengl2.0!

I installed the new card, installed the drivers, and loaded up a game of quake3 in opengl and it worked awesome! Now this isn’t my gaming computer (my core i7 windows 7, 4870X2 does the trick) so I only use this mac for video editing. the video card works fine, opengl works fine (tested in many applications) but after effects says “no opengl card”

What am I doing wrong? do I need to reinstall after effects?

    osx leopard fully updated

adobe after effects cs3 fully updated

    G5 dual 2.0

    4 x 1gb of DDR400

    thanks for the help!

here’s a link the a tech doc from adobe on cs3 and opengl:

    https://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402244.html

down a bit on the page for minimum mac requirements there this note:

Note: After Effects CS3 provides limited support for OpenGL 1.5 on Macintosh computers with PowerPC processors. OpenGL features that require OpenGL 2.0 are not available, including motion blur, antialiasing, and accelerated effects.

other things required for opengl on mac are the 8.0.1 update (i think the latest cs3 is 8.0.2) and osx 10.4.10 (i think the latest 10.4 is 10.4.11).

i really wouldn’t worry too much about opengl support (or lack of) in ae. opengl acceleration has too many issues to be used effectively for renders and will only help speed up previews, and even then i’d never set it to anything beyond ‘interactions’ (honestly, i usually work with it off all together).

if you are looking to speed up rendering a bit and make ae run more smoothly, you might pick up more ram. it’s pretty cheap now, and with 2 cores, the g5 will be able to use up to about 7gb just for ae rendering. owc has 2x2gb matched pairs for under $60 (double check that the g5 i spec’ed matches yours).

It simply does NOT work as advertised.

I’d say it works exactly> as advertised 🙂
There were lengthy posts about this recently. The fact that it’s not meant to be primarily used to speed up Render Queue renders doesn’t mean it’s trivial or useless. It does provide smoother/more responsive interactions for many features, which is its’ primary goal.

And yes, the Radeon 9800 is unfortunately not supported in CS3 and later, for the reasons I already explained in another forum.
