  • After Effects CS3 crashes after opening

Posted by James Harber on January 12, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I’m starting a project for a client on Monday so I decided to get into After Effect CS3 this weekend and set up my comps. After Opening the program, it immediately crashed and gave me the following error message:

A copy of your project was saved at: /Users/”username”/Documents/After Effects Crash.aep

I wasn’t opening a project, just starting the program from scratch, but it acted as if I had clicked on an .AEP file to launch a project.

I have used After Effects in the last 2 weeks, and it has been installed on this machine for about 6 months. It has not had any problems until today. I have looked online and cannot find any information. I’m getting kind of desperate because this project is under a tight deadline and we kick off in 2 days.

    Here are my specs:

    iMac
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Version 10.4.11

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If it crashes while displaying the splash screen, watch carefully what is being written out as it displays the various components it initializes. See if you can tell what it reads right before it dies. Might be a clue. Could be a bad font, which might involve a little detective work, the start of which may be emptying your fonts folder (this is a reason why I install new fonts into my user font folder so I can empty it to begin diagnosing a problem).
Also, (and if it crashes before the splash screen) check the crash log using Console. This might also give a clue.
That would be about my two cents worth.

    good luck!

The program actually loads up past the splash screen before crash. I can see the windows and it appears just fine, then crashes after about 2 seconds.

Here is what I’ve tried thus far.

    -Disabling all non-system fonts
    -Deleting the preferences file
    -Disabling open GL

So far, no luck. If worse comes to worse, I’ll just re install.

Hello, has anyone found a solution for this? I am experiencing the same error.

I have reinstalled, deleted preferences, etc. But it doesn’t help.

    Before After effects workep perfectly.

    Thanks.
