  • after effects: can do realtime with “faster” but not with “accurate”

    hey guys,

can anyone tell me why this is?
i used to work on a g5 mac with blackmagic out to a crt broadcast monitor, and it was perfect. full res real time previews.

i’m now on a mac pro intel at a new company, and the computer they’ve put me on has a bm decklink hd extreme. this can play hd realtime in full quality from final cut pro, but i can’t get the same results out of after effects, even in pal.

in ae, there are two options for previewing: faster and accurate. faster pixelates the frame but gives me real time feedback. accurate gives the client what they want in terms of quality, but it won’t play real time, it goes about half speed.

i’ve been searching the net for a solution for a while, and can’t find anything in the bm documentation either. can anyone shed some light on the subject? there MUST be a way to get real time full quality pal/ntsc res previews out onto my client monitor.

    thanks,
    scott.

    Hello,

I am on a Microsoft Windows based machine. If After Effects I go to the Preferances Tab> Video Preview> then I choose from the dropdown menu the Blackmagic Design device, then I setup the resolution from the dropdown box to either Blackmagic PAL or Blackmagic one the HD settings depending on what HD I am working in.

You should then see tick boxs such as render on desktop etc, fast previews etc.

Then click okay then you should be able to output to your Broadcast CRT etc as it will be outputting the composition output via the Blackmagic device.

    Thanks,

    Leo

yes, i’ve got all this down, and output appears both in afx and also the client monitor, but that’s not my issue.
my issue is that i can’t get a full quality render (ie, using “accurate” in the blackmagic settings) to play in real time.

if i set the preview options to “faster” it plays real time, but even though my comp settings are set to full, and it displays full quality on my computer monitor, the broadcast monitor shows a pixelated version that looks like half res.
if i set my comp settings to half res, the broadcast monitor looks like it’s showing 1/3 res.

this is weird because using a bm card on an older mac (non-intel) the preview is full quality and real time.
it’s not an issue with my broadcast monitor as i get full quality realtime hd playback from fcp.

are there special drivers needed to get proper playback functionality out of after effects? the manual does not seem to indicate this.

i am baffled as to why one program can play realtime quality hd and another program can’t even do realtime quality pal/ntsc or lower.

    thanks,
    scott.

    Hello,

Sound like your project settings and Blackmagic output settings are not the same. I had the same problem when I had a 1280×720 HD comp but my output was set to Blackmagic SD out. SO I was getting 1/4 res looking images on my Broadcast Monitor.

    Hope that helps?

I’ve had this problem before as well…my solution was to move the HD card to slot #4 (mine was in another slot- yours may already be in slot #4)
However, today I’ve noticed that the problem is back again, and I’m flustered…
