After Effects 7.0 Ram Issues
Hello, I am running a Apple G5 Quad 2.5 with 4.5 GB of Ram and I have recently just purchased and installed the latest version of After Effects.
When I check system profiler it reads that I have 4.5 GB of Memory.
But when I Launch after effects, it states i have 3.0 GB of Memory.
I do not know why this happens. But I need help!

This is normal. Although Mac OS can use a lot of RAM (16GB? I forget the max), it can only allocate about 3.5 GB of RAM to each application. And more of that is lost to OS overhead, so your effective RAM allocation per application is about 2.5-3 GB.
So what’s the point of having more than 4 GB if that’s the case? Mac OS can allocate 3 GB of RAM to EACH application, so you could have Photoshop, AE, FCP, and other apps open at the same time using 3 GB RAM each, as long as you have enough RAM for all to take the maximum.

This makes sense, I had no idea that OS X has done this, is it the same with a Windows Based PC?

Yes, though Windows is limited to 2 GB per app. There is a way to increase it to 3 GB, but it can potentially cause stability issues. The 64-bit version of Windows has a much higher limit, but very few applications are written for 64-bit.
