  Affecting the duration of an emitter

  A true newbie here….

  How do you affect the time length of an emitter?
  For example, I know how to place an emitter, like fireworks
  on a still or moving image, but for emitters that are of constant
  time length (continual loop), how do you put them on an image and fade them out so as not to last the entire length of the clip–like the “Star Trek” transporter effect emitter?

  Hope I’m being clear with what I’m asking–
