    AF-100 With Tokina 28-70 at Virgin River Canyon

    On the way home from spring break we drove through The Virgin River Canyon. The clouds were so beautiful I had to shoot them.
    I purchased a well liked lens from ebay, the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8. Nice lens,fast and pretty sharp. The lens has a interesting history. It has lens coatings from Angenieux. A lot of info on the lens is confusing but I got sucked in because I’m a geek! Anyway its a nice fast lens. Shot this in about an hour and edited in Final Cut Pro, lightly graded in Apple Color. I’m trying to use Color more for grading so this was a good piece to grade with mostly contrast adjustments.

    Absolutely beautiful footage!

    I’ve been thinking about picking one of those Tokinas for my Canon… how do you like it? Also, is it parfocal (when you zoom in and focus, does it appear to hold focus when zoomed back out)? I’ve found lots of conflicting information on the subject. I’m hoping it might be a good budget alternative to the Canon 24-70L, with a whole quarter-stop of extra aperture, no less.

    I tried to see if it hold focus but I don’t trust it. Its a still lens and really isn’t designed to work that way. A proper video lens would be the only one I would trust for zooming.
    I like the lens a lot. Its a good value for a fast zoom. I have done some simple sharpness tests and would say for what I paid for it its a steal. Is it the sharpest lens? No. But it cost way less compared to Nikon or Canon at the same f-stop. At 70mm wide open it looks really nice. I did notice that at 50mm wide open its a little softer. I talked to a Tokina engineer and he explained that most zooms are vulnerably in the middle of the zoom range. Still a really nice lens at a pretty good price.
