  • AE7 hangs on exit

We have AE CS3 on two systems and AE7 on two others. On one system with AE7, we’re suddenly getting a weird issue. We open a project (existing or new), work on it fine, save fine….but when we exit or close the program, nothing seems to happen, then the workspace turns white and task manager says AE7 is “not responding.” Can only get out of this by ending task.

It’s not a huge issue as we’re able to work, save and exit thru task manager. But very annoying.

    Have tried:

    1. Removing all 3rd party plug-ins from plug-in directory

    2. Deleting After Effects .ini, prefs, and workspace.xml and cache files.

    3. Updating and rolling back display card drivers.

    4. Loading various projects and creating new ones (with nothing loaded in the bins or timeline)

    5. Doing standard PC virus and malware checks.

    6. Turning off every non-essential process or service while running AE.

    7. Removing any exotic codecs from system and updated Quicktime to latest release.

These are accumlated troubleshooting steps…meaning all of the above has been done (one step at a time), and the problem remains.

Anybody have a clue here what’s happening? The ONLY thing that has changed on the system is we installed a new version of our VelocityQ editing software. But I even uninstalled that…and still no luck.

This is a system that has worked without issue for at least a year with no significant changes in the PC or software (other than noted above).

    Thanks in advance.

RAM settings and disk cache set to normal?
Multiproc settings off if using nucleo?

opengl won’t work with all graphics cards, so some AE users disable it

if uninstalling and re-installing and removing the plugins from the effects folder doesn’t work, then download microsoft’s free Windows Install Clean Up

    https://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml

and remove cs3 because your installishield might be corrupted

    update InstallShield wouldn’t hurt too.
    https://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q108322&sliceId=1

You could also try manually removing cs3 reg settings as a last resort, backup registry first though!

turn the caps lock key on prior to opening the bad project. this will disable the preview update when the project opens, which will effectively disable the rendering of the effect, allowing you to go in and remove the effect form the comp.

Can you exit with “CAPS lock on” the whole time?

RAM settings and disk cache are set to normal…Multiprocessor settings off…OpenGL plugin removed and don’t use OpenGL on this system…

Trying the “clean-up” utility and updating Install Shield are good suggestions. We just had to delete a bunch of stuff from Install Shield to upgrade our NLE editing application…so that could certainly be the culprit.

This is AE7…not CS3…but have done registry clean-ups with mutliple utilities (which often fixes issues with other software)

Have disabled preview…no luck on exit.

Again…we can work, save etc. Just a huge annoyance because we cannot exit normally and can’t save workspaces etc.

Will report back on the “clean-up and install shield” suggestions.

Still no joy…tried the install shield update and the clean-up utility. Same problem. Also re-ran registry cleaners and did a repair of quicktime pro (latest version of quicktime). Still not solved.

The only other possible issue would be the recent upgrade of our editing software. Hate to uninstall that. Could create issues with our editing app, which is our bread and butter.

Scratching my head on this one.

    Chris,

I recognized your name from the Yahoo Velocity Group. I assume you are having these issues on systems you have upgraded to ver 10. I was having the same issues and got an email from Darby. Text below.

I had to delete the below mentioned files for AE to go back to normal exits.

“There are three files we install to AE. Two should be in the plugins
folder: LeitchListener.aex and VXMEDIA_IO.aex. Then one in the main
directory: AENXFileReader.dll. However, make sure that a duplicate of
any of these files is not resident in the root or any subfolders, as
this could cause the issue you are seeing.”

    Lee,

You rule! I figured it must’ve been something with the V10 install and AE integration, but it took me 2 installs to get V10 working..so I didn’t want to thru another uninstall/reinstall!

You actually don’t have to delete the files. The Velocity10 install puts the AENXFileReader.dll in the “support” folder by mistake. I moved it to the main AE7 directory and it solved the exiting problem.

Now whether it still works with V10 is another story. But we don’t plan to even test that for a while.

    Thanks a ton.
