AE7 constantly crashing while working
Hello,
I’m working in AE7 and the program insists on crashing every few minutes. I’m using a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB iMac. Snow Leopard if it matters.
The crash happens when I’m normally working on a project. Usually when I’m scrubbing through the timeline. A few times as I was importing images. Hell, sometimes after working on a project for like 10 minutes or so. I get the spinning wheel and shortly after it crashes. It also happens when I’m rendering. I did a few searches here and found the “secret” preference menu and set the “purge every xxx frames” to 30. Though I haven’t tried rendering anything yet.
In a few rare instances, computer has froze and the entire program changed colors. Hard to explain, but it was like strips of random colors…Wished I had saved a screenshot. Anyway, any clue on why its giving me such a hard time? Is there a software update I need to install?

Yes, there is! AE7 is not supported on Snow Leopard, and it doesn’t run natively on Intel Macs (it runs under PPC emulation in Rosetta). You are two full versions behind, and you will find getting support for your configuration almost impossible. You might look into your upgrade eligibility for After Effects CS4.
On a separate note, if you’re using any interframe compression in your footage (like HDV or MP4), you should search this forum for “Dave’s Stock Answer #1” to read more about why that causes trouble.
