I’m working on a tutorial project from Eran Stern’s new DVD and I keep getting the following error message:

“After Effects error: could not create folder Adobe After Effects Auto-Save.”

Obviously, I’ve copied the DVD’s content to my hard drive, so It’s not like AE is trying to save to an unwrite-able disk. I’ve also tried right-clicking on the project icon itself and unlocking it and enabling Read & Write permissions, but still no luck! When I hit “CONTROL + S” to save, the save option is grayed out. The same goes for “Save As” and “Save And Increment”. I’m out of ideas! Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

$10 says you are on a Mac. And did I mention in the past 20 minutes how much I hate the way that sometimes — for seemingly unknown arcane and obscured reasons known only to coding elves — the Mac will create locked folders and nested files. Opening and unlocking just the nested files won’t work. You must also set the read/write permissions for the folder also. And don’t even get me started on how you sometimes even have to do things one-at-a-time even though it looks like you can set the nested permissions as a group by clicking on the folder and telling it to set permissions on all the objects contained in the folder — but don’t believe it.

    Rant off.

    I feel better now…

    :o)

PS: If all else fails, drag the folder and files up to your desktop, that too sometimes works.

You are correct, sir! I’m a Mac guy! I tried your suggestion about unlocking the entire folder (and its’ contents) and that seemed to do the trick! I do have some questions regarding the project, however. Does Eran frequent these forums? Is there a way to contact him? Thanks!

You can contact Eran through a comment post to the bottom of any of his articles, he will respond there.

I am glad the solution worked for you.

    Best regards,
