Activity Forums Adobe After Effects AE to DVD

I have a project that involves both short segments of video (edited in FCP) and animation (AE) and i need to create 1 movie file from both sources, initially for DVD. Thus far i have exported the various video from FCP uncompressed and imported them into the AE project, then exported the entire project from AE using the Animation compression setting. The final output looks good, but once encoded on dvd, lots of quality is lost.

I have also tried exporting the AE animation segments separately and importing them into FCP, then exporting to mpeg2 with Compressor, but again the quality decreases once in the FCP project.

So my question is this… what is the best process to combine both the video & animation together for final output to dvd – ie. compression type, etc.

    Much appreciated for your insight,
    Dan

Normally, like you, I make sure that whatever goes into the MPEG-2 compressor (whether Compressor or Digigami) is of the highest quality, either Animation or an 8-bit-per-channel (bpc) or 10-bpc uncompressed codec, such as the Decklink. A 10-bpc source can sometimes give a better result, especially with gradients.

However, MPEG-2 is a lossy codec, and there is always some quality loss. To try to minimize that loss, you should look into your MPEG-2 settings and make sure you’re using VBR (variable bitrate) and going for the highest data rate and quality. Also, see if your MPEG-2 compressor allows for some smoothing of the video before compression. Aside from that, you might have to accept that MPEG-2 degrades video, and can be unkind to graphics.

    Hi,

It will be great if any body can clear me out of this.

I have an after effects of 3 minutes to be rendered and convert in to dvd.

    can you please suggest me

    – render in ? format
    – compressed or uncompressed
    – if compressed ? codec and at ? bit rate(i have most of em in my AE Render List Divx, Qt sorenson3 , cinepak…)
    – then how to put it in dvd format in a DVD+R using Nero 6.

#if i render uncompressed will nero compress it for me, if it doesnt compress
    will the dvd play uninterrupted.

    – thanks
and excuse me if i am not clear what i want.

    -ib
