  • AE text looks awful on video monitor – help

Posted by Chris Cummings on January 2, 2007 at 11:36 pm

    Hi All,

I’m new to AE (Pro 7), and am outputting my first animations to Final Cut. I created text elements in AE using Helvetica Neue 65 medium and 55 roman in various gray hues on a black background. On the cinema display on the computer, it looks clear and beautiful, but on the external monitor, and after importing the lossless animation export into Final Cut, the text looks jagged, ugly and very difficult to read.

I’ve tried everything I can think of to no avail. Comp settings are all at NTSC DV 720 x 480, with the pixel aspect ratio at .9, and all settings are best quality. I made these text layers 3D with Motion blur, and nested them in a precomp, but turning these settings off and also checking the collapse transformations didn’t seem to make any difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers and Happy New Year,
    ~Chris

Make sure you are outputting your video through an uncompressed card throuh SDI or component video to a decent broadcast monitor.

If you use composite video or DV or even worse, the combination of the two then you will have extremly poor results.

Check the AE Render output with Quicktime player. Is it ok?

Check you render settings In FCP. Make sure the clip (w/Alpha) gets rendered in FCP and it is not just adjusting the rez on the fly (RT).

    Oh just re-read your post.

Is the Black background be interpreted as an Alpha?
Are you using the Alpha Channel?
If this clip is not going over something else inside FCP don’t use losses animation, use the DV settings.
