AE Stopped Importing Illustrator Footage to Bounding Box
Hi All,
After installing a CS4 update, my ai files started importing at artboard size instead of at artwork bounding box (imports as if artboard is an invisible object). This happened mid project so if I edit and reload any previously bound artwork, the bounding box is now the size of the ai artboard, throwing anchor/center point off significantly
If I try to import the exact same illustrator files that were previously (properly) bound in AE, I get this problem. There must be a setting in AE for this, seems simple enough, can’t figure it out.
I reset my prefs, nothing changed.
Importing as a comp/comp-cropped layers doesn’t help.
Collapse transformations did not help.Current CS4 Versions

AI 14.0.0Why does AE not want to let go of the AI artboard now? Any ideas or direction pointing very much appreciated. Thanks, Jesse

Just upgraded to CS5 and it has the same problem. Possible the problem is me?

Not a direct answer to your question, but I usually fit the artboard to the art I want in Illustrator as a part of asset prep (unless I’m working in a specific frame size in Illustrator and want to preserve that into AE).

Makes sense, and I’ll totally do that moving forward if this problem persists. As for the artwork I was able to import before, that disregarded the artboard (or cropped around artwork), I wonder why that stopped functioning. Was it a bug to begin with? Sucks this happened mid project.

I agree, its become a PIA.
I now import ai files as Composition > Retain Layer Size, at least this keeps the artwork bounding box where I prefer it.

I upgraded to CS5 thinking the new verbiage “Retain Layer Sizes” would help. It didn’t.

Don’t use the imported comp, use the layer from the folder it imports.

I am. The layer still holds on to the artboard size, even when inside comp folder.

Could you downsave your illustrator file to CS4 and see if you can replicate my results? Curious if this is an Illustrator settting. Attached is my CS4 AI version of your artwork as well.

Your CS5 .ai file works perfectly when importing to my AE CS4 and AE CS5. Either something in the CS4 Illustrator update threw it off or I have some weird setting that won’t let go. Reseting all my CS4 Illustrator prefs didn’t help.
Curious if this could also be a PDF/Acrobat issue.
