AE shadows in Avid
Whenever I try to give a graphic a soft edge or apply a shadow to a graphic in After Effects, it has a strange look to it when I bring it into the Avid. The Shadows will sometimes look grey. If I try to add a softness to the edge, an almost white background will show up behind the graphic. I use the Animation codec in After Effects to render and other than these two problems everything else looks amazing. When I bring into the Avid I have both options for 609 checked. I hope this doesn’t sound too confusing.

Hi,
This is a premultiplication error common when looking at an animation with a soft alpha channel in an editing system.
When you render the animation, in the output module, obviously you will be setting the “Channels” to RGB+Alpha. Under this, set color to “Straight – Unmatted”
The resulting animation will look horrible when viewed in Quicktime, but will mask properly in the Avid.

Also,
You might want to go to the Avid web site and download the Meridian codec if you are using one of the more recent Avid systems. Importing a Meridian animation goes much faster than importing something rendered with the Animation codec.
