I don’t know about FCP, but AE can’t recognize more than 2 GB of RAM, as long as it’s still written for 32-bit OSes.

Apple’s Motion uses as much RAM as you can throw at it (good), but it’s really picky about graphics cards. Check the Apple site.

Adding more RAM (up to 2 GB) will allow you to RAM preview longer segments of your AE timeline, and could make the difference between a successful render or a crash. (to get around that risk, search the COW for “secret prefs”) More RAM doesn’t speed up RAM previews. However, you can search the COW for Nucleo, something that does speed RAM previews, apparently.

And, technically, AE does not do realtime RAM previews — it will play back the comp at the correct frame rate and speed, but you have to wait for the frames to render. Only processor speed (and maybe Nucleo) can speed up that process.

Thanks, Steve. I have four gigs of RAM and clearly, that’s adequate for the kind of RAM previews I’ve been getting. I’ll check out your other suggestions.
