    Hi,
I was just wondering if someone would be able to tell me which version of After Effects would run best on a PowerMac G4 400MHz with 768MB RAM? or would it be a bad idea to run it. I am currently using 6.5 on a 15″ 1.25GHz powerbook with 1.25GB RAM and I’m looking to get it running on a desktop, and have the possibility of getting the PowerMac G4 for cheap.
    Many thanks,
    Martin

You could be in for a world of hurt if you try to transfer AE files between two different versions of AE, since you can’t save from the newer version as an older version, and the effects used in the older version might break when imported into the newer version.

I don’t recommend getting the cheap desktop and running an older version of AE. Your productivity would go down, not up, in my opinion. If you want some of the benefits of a desktop, get a bigger monitor and some external Firewire drives.

Now if you want to add a card such as the Decklink, then you need a desktop, but I believe it has to be a G5.
