  • AE not importing MP4 files and not linking properly with Premiere Pro

Posted by Tyler Lynn on September 8, 2020 at 7:21 pm

I just went from a mac to windows, and now After effects won’t let me
import .mp4 files, telling me “After Effects could not read from source”
and then “the file may be damaged or corrupted”. But I know these files
are fine, they’re working on Premiere. Additionally, when I try to do
dynamic link from premiere “replace with AE composition” the footage
just comes in as the rainbow bars screen. I have a feeling these issues
    are linked. Any ideas?

A little more info may help. What version of the program are you running? I’ve seen this issue a while back on the forum and it was blamed on a previous version of AE. It’s probably not a codec issue since it’s working in Premiere.

This might be a huge guess on my part, but since you are new to Windows, it may simply be just installing the Quicktime Player. Are you able to play MP4’s on their own outside of Premiere?

Quicktime is dead and installing the player does nothing. Apps use their own encoders and decoders.

Don’t use MP4’s with H264 codec as source footage.
Convert them first to ProRes or DnxHD or your other preferred codec that doesn’t use interframe compression.
