  • AE MASK FRUSTRATION! Why do I keep selecting them?

So I have done extensive work in AE and have reached a level that I feel is pro status, so I am not new to this program…but there is one thing that pisses me off so bad and I need your help with it!! Ever since they made masks editable in the main comp window in AE, it has been the biggest love hate relationship with a feature I have ever had. The thing that is pissing me off is when I click on a layer in the timeline or in the comp window itself and instead of selecting the layer, it selects the mask, so when I scale or move the layer it scales or moves the mask. The only way I have figured out how to prevent this is to lock the mask. Is there any other way? IS THIS PISSING ANYONE ELSE OFF AS MUCH AS ME!!! Thanks for your help guys!

Try hitting F2 to deselect all. Next, select the layer. You should just get the layer.

Thanks for the quick reply Steve but that didn’t work. It’s really weird, it’s almost as though my AE shifts into mask mode, it even changes the shape of the pointer to an arrow without an end on it, and no matter what I do or where I click I can only select masks. I don’t know why it does it, but it drives me absolutely crazy! And it changes from layer to layer. Some layers work fine, others don’t…I am just stumped!

Have you tried switching off Mask View in the Comp Window?

How about just locking the mask by clicking the little box next to the mask itself.

I gotta say that I think the way that masks are utilized in AE is way sub standard to competing programs. I find it takes me a lot longer to jack with AE’s masks than with other apps. I can never get down when to grab a point. Sometimes I grab a point, sometimes I seem to grab something else, or I moved the whole mask even when not double clicking. I’m sure there are hardened pros that are slick with them, but I find them very counter intuitive.

    just my griping.
