AE does not start, memory out 23::40 message appears.
Posted by Maxim Dierickx on September 5, 2008 at 3:53 pmHey everyone,
I just tried to install After Effects CS3 on my iMac. Installation works out fine, but then when I try to open the program it shows me a message window: Out of Memory ( 23 :: 40 ). After that a message comes about “licensing for this product has stopped working”.
I’m running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.4.
Computer specs: 3,06Ghz, 4GB Ram, 1TB, Geforce 8800GT.I already tried reinstalling.
Can anyone help me out here? Thanks,

September 5, 2008 at 7:02 pmtry pulling the preference file folder from users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects, it the folder called 8.0. just move it to your desktop. ae will rebuild all the files in that folder when your try to open it again.
another common crash at launch cause is old codecs… is this a new machine? and did you bring over or install codecs that you had on an older mac? or maybe use the migrate assistant? if so, you might want to pull the codecs that were installed. these are usually in library/quicktime and users/username/library/quicktime (the core codecs are in system/library/quicktime, leave those alone unless you know you placed some there manually. just move the other out to a folder on the desktop and try relaunching ae. if it works, then you need to try finding updates to the older codecs to get them back.

September 8, 2008 at 2:38 pmdoes you imac meet the minimum specs? did you have the after effects cs3 demo/beta installed prior to installing the full version? and is this the full version or the educational version?
i had problems uninstalling the the beta once i got the full version (evidently the cs3 uninstaller was a beta too). i had to download a special uninstaller from adobe. i’m not sure if this would be a problem with the demo version too…
i asked about the educational version because i’ve heard that you cannot install the 8.0.2 update on educational versions, although that wouldn’t explain a problem launching the application.
you might uninstall ae (there is now an uninstaller in applications>utilities>adobe installers). i’d go ahead and run the disk utilities (applications>utilities) to repair permissions and check the disk for errors. then do a safe boot and try installing cs3. this is from my help file, it probably applies to your machine too:
- Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
- Press the power button.
- Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
- You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
- Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
then reinstall ae, reboot (normal boot) and see if ae works.
adobe does give free support for installation issues, you might give them a call if you continue to have problems

September 8, 2008 at 8:04 pmabout the only thing left before trying the adobe support would be check your hardware to make sure there isn’t something actually wrong with it (it’s rare, but it happens)…
find the original osx install disk that came with the mac. read the label for the instructions to run the hardware test utility (usually you just pop it in, reboot and hold the option key… several icons should show up, select the hardware test). run the more thorough check to fully test your ram for errors.
if it all checks out, it’s probably time to call adobe support…
