Thank you all for the many excellent posts I have read over the last week as I begin to use AE CS4 for the FIRST time.

I am using Windows 7 RC and this is probably the root cause but please read on and if you have any ideas let me know.

The specs are below. I have read many posts and have a good understanding of the prefernces file, caching, Multiproccessor, Memory, OpenGL, bit depth, down sample factor, AERO…..

I have AVCHD footage and have been testing performance natively and with intermediate codecs.
PNG, DNxHD, Uncompressed, (all good) Cineform (buggy).
Whatever I try though just seems uncomfortably slow to Render for a RAM preview with any combination of preferences.

I have monitored the AfterFX processes, 5 with Multiprocessor enabled however only the foreground process ever uses any CPU cycles (maxes out at 20%) or any memory. The other 4 processes do nothing and are idle.
I get identical performance when I disable the Multiprocessor option.

Is there something I am unaware of that I need to do to invoke all the processes? Or is this most likely a bug?
Is 10fps RAM Preview render for uncompressed normal? 3fps for PNG?

I understand 9.0.2 is out but my updater says there are no updates available. My hard drives don’t appear to be reaching anything near bandwidth. I feel like my computer is running with one arm tied behind it’s back.

In premiere pro the performance is terrible also. Video stutters, drops frames… unusable.

I am using the latest drivers, including nVidia’s

    I am running a notebook;

A Quad Intel core 2 Extreme Q9300 processor
1 SATA RAID 0 Internal Array for System
1 SATA RAID 0 External Array for Data (eSATA connected)
    8Gb RAM
    nVidia Quadro FX3700M
    Windows 7 RC
    CS4 Adobe After Effects 9.0.1.51
    Antivirus Disabled

After Effects 9.0.1 is the most recent available version.

    Thank you Jimmy,

The 9.02 update has made ALL the difference. My Ram Previews are now double the duration of what they where previously and take about half the time to render. When viewing the processes in task manager during a render you can see all 5 processes active and the render happens in a quarter of the time.

    Yes very happy….

Also what has become obvious now that it runs at the speed it should. During a render when the processor gets going suddenly the speed of the render can drop until the fan kicks in and a few moments after cools the processor then the render goes back to speed again. – Hope this helps somebody.
