back in the day, if I had too many apps running AE might slow down

now, i get crazy popping layers and glitches all over the place, I have to restart before rendering for the night, and even then, will get weirdness.

I like how fast these quad- dualcore macpro’s are, but damn, there is nothing more obnoxious than an unreliable renderer

ram situation isnt bad but not great, 6gb

am rendering some layer heavy comps, with frischluft lenscare and colorista, the latter seems to sometime cause some layers to be invisible or act weird

if you think that it is the effects that are the problem, check to see if there are any updates (free) or possibly upgrades ($$$) from the fx provider…

also, some effects don’t play nice with ae’s multiprocessing, so if there aren’t any updates/upgrades that say they work better with cs3, multiprocessing, or osx 10.5, try disabling multiprocessing in ae.

or, if you think it is faster to replace bad frames with multiprocessing on, then leave mp on but render to an image sequence. it will be easier to replace bad frames when you find them.

even though a i don’t think this will help your issue, you might try limiting the number of cores that ae can use to between 3-6. this will give more ram to each render process and may help to improve stability and performance. you can do this in cs3 with the preference hack (search the cow for that one) or with a cool little gui script called throttle.
