I’m running AE8 on a quad core with 8 gigs of ram
This is a fresh install of everything.
    box is squeaky clean.
    But AE is completely unreliable.
renders and ram previews consistently hang and or lock up the box
when multi-processing is on, activity monitor shows the offender is aeselflink #8.
I can kill that process and renders resume???
Is this an indication that that particular ram riser or chip is bad?
or just the tail end of the process chain?
it’s hanging up whether multi-processing is on or off.
I’ve tried all the tried-and-true remedies
Ram settings, updates, re-seated cards, yada-yada
I don’t see any recognizable pattern to this one.
    any ideas?- help.
    deadlines looming!

[s gregory] “renders and ram previews consistently hang and or lock up the box

Generally I would tell you to disable ‘render multiple frames simultaneously’ or increase your memory cache size to reduce the number of instances AE creates. It does take some time to boot up the additional instances for multi-frame rendering.

[s gregory] “it’s hanging up whether multi-processing is on or off.”

But this makes me think my suggestions wouldn’t help any =)

Do you have any other applications running with AE? What OS version are you running? Have you experienced problems with any other applications? Anything else you can tell us about your setup? OpenGL enabled/disabled? Disk Cache? RAID? Capture Card?

Which graphics card are you using?
I’m on an ATI Radeon X1900

    Hey: Thanks for responding
    Here’s the scoop:
    Quad core – 10.4.11 – 8gigs of ram – Radeon X1900 – KONA 3 – External RAID.
Box is a fresh build – squeaky clean.
all apps and drivers most current versions
    All necessary firmware updated
I removed open GL, I do broadcast and don’t like what it does to source files and fonts.
After effects hangs up whether its running alone or with other apps open.
Ive tried various ram allocation configs.
most recently reduced Max Ram cache to 60%, Just now crashed.
Crashes with disc cache on or off
There were some conflicts upgrading some of my plug-ins…
Tinderbox has re-engineered their sets and some legacy versions are not recognized.
    also true of Delirium.
Forces you to manually rebuild effects chains
I’ve built lots of systems in my time – had some bad boxes – this ones a mystery.
