I think the very best use of your money would be to buy Total Training’s DVD series on After Effects.

As someone new to the program as well, I bought these DVDs, thinking I’d watch them once and then flip ’em on eBay. Six months later, I still have them and keep watching various segments of the DVDs over and over. They’re fantastic, and I continue to use them as a resource to learn this beast of a program. I much prefer them to a class that probably costs more, covers less ground, and doesn’t give you the benefit of repeat viewings.

i have one of the meyers books and will probably get the dvds but there is something about someone giving you a one on one guide through the programme.
