ae clips suddenly playing sluggish in fc6
hello everyone, i’m having an issue with my sequence in fc6. any clips i bring in from after effects (compressed at millions + colors) will play sluggish and stutter in my timeline.
i’m confused cause I haven’t changed the settings and this just started happening recently. clips and sequences that were fine a week ago, now won’t play.
i even compared the sequence in this fc on my new computer (macpro) to a fc5 sequence on my old g5 that hadn’t been upgraded and the clips played fine there.
hmmmmm….
any suggestions?

Sounds like the field order of the clips may be wrong, or it’s time to trash prefs.
If you don’t need an alpha channel on them, you could try using ProRes.

would i be able to trash preferences without having to reinstall fc? am i just going to have rerender whatever i have in my sequences after that?
the field dominances for the clips are either set to none, or lower (even). what does this information affect?

Trashing prefs is easiest with FCP Rescue, which is a free app. No, it does not require a re-install.
If your field dominance is set to none, then do what Dave suggested.

so the resolution of my ae clips matches that of my sequence and of other clips in timeline (footage digitized into fc), and i’m still getting screwey playback with RT set to safe, high, and full. the playback was messed up when set to dynamic as well.
i’m running a macpro with fc6 and 10gb ram. the strangest thing is that all these clips are months old and have played fine in various timelines of various projects, and now they won’t.
i suspect it’s one setting that i’m not catching, especially since this more or less happened after i took a job where i was dealing with hdv footage and totally different settings, having to reset the scratch disk to the drive i was using.
but everything lines up as it should.
any help would be appreciated i’m losing time!

Trash your prefs. You can do this manually or let FCP Rescue do it. It’s free and easy.

fcp rescue didn’t seem to do anything, if it’s just as simple as pressing the trash button?
could it be a memory thing with external harddrives? i have 5 each partitioned into two partitions.
i’m stumped,

Ignacio,
There’s whatsoever nothing gained from partitioning, it simply adds layer upon layer to your FCP database, and wastes processing power and throughput. Partitioning makes the operating system work that much harder everytime it calls up a file ot group of files. I’m not saying that’s absolutely the source of your problem, but it’s certainly not helping your cause.
The rule of thumb is, the fewer levels of partitions and directories FCP needs to go through, the better, and the longer you’ll be able to work on a big prpoject without it’s database becoming muddled up as well.

Ignacio,
With FCP Rescue, you must quit FCP, then hit the trash button. When you re launch FCP you should get a prompt to reset your primary scratch disk, and you will have to re-do your easy setups and preferences.
If you do not see all this, you did not do it correctly.
