  AE 7 Project files corrupted

  Upon opening several different projects in AE 7, all of the project windows open, but before coming active, they close leaving just an empty composition window open. Then: the beach ball of death. This has happened to a half dozen of projects that had been converted from 6.5 files. The autosave versions of these files behave the same way.
  I have found a workaround, but don’t understand why it works. By starting off with a new project, I am able to import the offending project and save and work as normal.
  Anyone have any idea what’s going on?
