Arrgh, I just dropped $5k on this Mac Pro (3 ghz quad Xeon) and After Effects does not like it. It loves to crash, especially when I’m using the Fast Blur filter, which I have been using quite frequently. I’ve noticed that if I change the OpenGL option from ‘Always On’ to ‘Interactive’ I am able to use the Fast Blur without a crash, but then I crash anyway when I’m doing something else. Tried Adaptive Resolution but then when I’m doing a RAM preview it crashes again if I let it loop too many times. I’m suspecting:

    A) My NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT is not compatible with AE7. I looked up supported cards on the Adobe site and it’s not listed… scary.

    or..

    B) One of my 6 gigs of RAM is bad

This is driving me crazy! I have a project to deliver and I bought this @*%$* machine to speed up my workflow, but it has done nothing but slow me down. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

i have found that there is a problem with opengl accelerated effects and intel macs — well… at least the mac pro. other opengl accelerated features are ok, like blending modes and motion blur (the feature, not the effect).

the safest way to work is to just turn off opengl and use adaptive resolution. but i have found that if you apply an opengl accelerated effect to an adjustment layer it works great. although that means if you want to, say, fast blur a layer, but not the layers under it, you will need to pre-comp that layer and apply your fast blur to an adjustment layer in the pre-comp. you can get a list of opengl accelerated effects and features from the help menu, there is only about a dozen accelerated effects.

i have been noticing (now that i have turned opengl back on) that there is occasional wierdness with some of the opengl effects… color adjustments occasionally ‘flicker’ for a frame or two, 3d anti-aliasing is not too good (my card supports anti-aliasing but the rendering is rough), and scaling of square pixel images in non-square comps isn’t as good as ae rendering.

The issue is related to the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card. It does not deal with openGL very will and has been crashing on many programs that use opengl.

There are two things that you can do to work around it.
    1) believe it or not if you limit your memory down to 2 gigs max (seems to be related to a 32 bit to 64 bit addressing issue which is why if you go down to 2 gigs it works), it mitigates the crashing issue and does not cause the crashes to occur.
    2) get a different video card any of the ATI cards seem to be fine.

Nvidia is has always had a bit of an issue with mac drivers and it seems like they are holding true to form.
