  • Advice? Media Composer / ProTools suite based on Blackmagic gear and a MacPro

    Hi Everyone,

I hope you can provide some advice in regards to a new editing suite.
Of course, I did some internet search. So here are my results 😉

I want to setup a cost effective suite for a school around Media Composer 6 using Blackmagic gear.

Since we want to use ProTools as well, this is the configuration I want to go for:

    MacPro running Lion 64bit
    MediaComposer 6
Latest ProTools 10 (the “normal” edition)

    I thought of this gear:

    – Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme
    – Audio Mixer “Artist Mix” (Euphonix) because it is fully supported by both apps, i.e. sliders move automatically.
    – Blackmagic HDlink for monitoring of SDI signals on an HP Dreamcolor.
    – Standard XLR input Speakers

    Cabeling:

SDI cable from I/O card to HDlink which converts the signal to DVI for the Dreamcolor.

Connect the XLR output of the Decklink Extreme directly to the speakers.

Connect the “Artist Mix” directly over ethernet to control audio in MC6 and ProTools

I think the config looks good and should provide students with a very powerful editing solution for their projects.

Do you agree or have any concerns?

    Thanks a lot people!
    Regards,
    Sasha

    Hi guys,

I am wondering if my question is too common to be answered?
    I wouldn’t think so.
If you have time, I would appreciate your feedback.

    Thanks!

I did a similiar (except for the Pro Tools) set-up where Im running Avid, Decklink Extreme HD and a RED Rocket Card.
So far as so good except for display output from Avid to Decklink.
The Decklink is hooked up to a Flanders.
The Flanders has two SDI inputs.
I would like to avoid using the Nitris DX (Avid I/O box) for SDI.
This way the RED card can use the Flanders along with Decklink.
As far as adding Pro Tools, Ive heard good things to date but wish I can add to your post.
Our Pro Tools Mac Pro is hooked up to a Yamaha DM1000.
Maybe in the future we will put it all on one box.
You have any luck to date on answers? outside of Cow of course 🙂

    Hey,
    Thanks for your reply.
No, I wasn’t able make the above setting happen so far. And I couldn’t get any information from it either.
Although, some person other person told me that all this should be fine….

Will post, should I ever set this suite up.

    Cheers
