You’re trying to head in the right direction, but without an express card slot, your MBP cannot accommodate any of the Matrox MXO2 devices.

No…that won’t work for the MXO2 line. The only options are the V4HD and the AJA IO HD…that connect via firewire. But they don’t work with COLOR, as COLOR doesn’t work via firewire in HD.

Without an express slot, you are not going to have a good monitoring option. Unless you color correct in FCP, and not COLOR.

Thanks for your replies… i looked that the prices of the other boxes and they are mighty expensive!

At the moment i do colour correct in FCP, does this mean i will be able to hook it up correctly? and if so how? If i dont have ‘monitoring options’ what does this mean in the long run?

Sorry for the questions, when it comes to this i am pretty much a noobie.

[Ricky Milling] “At the moment i do colour correct in FCP, does this mean i will be able to hook it up correctly?”

YOu cannot color correct properly in FCP using the CANVAS. It doesn’t show you the proper gamma, nor a full res output. You need an external viewing option if you want to color correct for viewing on a TV. The Matrox MXO…the ORIGINAL MXO…might work. It takes the DVI signal out of the computer. Not sure about the compatibility between it and the Mini DVI connection…with a converter. Or the current monitor out solution with converters.

That to check your color correction you need to make DVDs or BluRays, and see what they look like, and then adjust. Or get a machine that has the proper connections for viewing. This used to be easy when working with DV and DVCPRO HD. ANything else you need third party hardware boxes. DVI to HDMI converters to HDTVs don’t work well either. They send out a computer signal, not a VIDEO signal.

Hi shane. I know that i cannot CC just by using FCP ( i did state that in my opening question). I have been looking at the matrox mxo and think that will be my only option (damn apple for taking away the express slot).

Is there a way to connect my mac via firewire to a deck then to a monitor?

You might want to think seriously about selling your MBP and getting a 17″ model, as they have the express card slot. Or, try to find a reasonably priced used MacPro. Trying to get your current computer to do what you want is simply not practical. Penguins are birds, but no matter how hard they flap their wings they can’t fly.

Yeah, im thinking about. But in the mean time i am considering buying a PCI express port for my PC

    https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ExpressCard-34-54-PCI-E-Express-Card-Adapter-Desktop-/180501590479?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item2a06bbb1cf#ht_3232wt_908

and then edit on my Mac and colour correct on my PC using the matrox mini deceive. Or maybe do the whole edit on my PC.

I was wondering what are the best programs for colour correcting, i have AVID media composer, but have not used it for grading.

The two best for the Mac are Apple Color and Davinci Resolve.
