  • Advice on bkg light fixtures for a small studio

I’m building a small (10′ x 10′) webcast studio for a client. Planning to use a simple muslin backdrop. I’m looking for low/no budget solutions for lighting the backdrop–as in what fluorescent lights could I get at Home Depot? Any suggestions on brands to look for, or things I should avoid?

A muslin backdrop looks best when you can’t really see what it is.

You would be better off looking for a 1 or 2 300w Fresnels on eBay.

Fluorescent lighting is way too flat.

You could try setting up a low powered work light and create some areas of shadows with it as well, but why not start to invest on lights you can use for other area of production?

    Thanks, Vince.
This is a small webcast studio in one room (10′ x 10′) of the client’s offices. No other production is planned, and the budget is tight. I’m considering fluorescents to keep the power needs and heat down.
Good tip on the muslin–I just looked at a similar setup that used plain, dark drapes as bkg–gave some texture yet didn’t compete with foreground.

In that case look at small spot lights at Home Depot. Add a couple of those metal clamps and you should be set.

You’re right; that’ll do the job and that’ll fit the budget. Thanks.
