  • Advice on an external monitoring solution for AE.

I do VFX and broadcast graphics in AE. Up until now, I’ve gotten away with using only my Apple Cinema Display, and guessing on how the images will look on a TV. But I’ve decided it’s time for me to go legit and invest in a reference monitor and output card.

I was thinking about going with a Kona 3. It’s probably overkill just for previewing AE renders, but I like knowing I’ll have capabilities in the future.

I’m on a Mac Pro, and do most of my work in AE7 in windows via bootcamp. I have a feeling the Kona won’t work in that case, but since the universal AE8 is not too far off I figure I’ll manage.

Is there anything else I should be aware of? Or perhaps any cheaper solutions?

    Thanks for any advice.

Blackmagic design do a series of SD and HD Decklink cards, which are about half the price of a Kona for HD…Not sure if AJA’s solutions are more ‘reliable’ or not, but I’ve been using an SD Decklink Pro for a couple of years now for AE monitoring and capture/playout of uncompressed SD via Premiere and it works a treat. Mine only cost
