  • Advice needed for first purchase of Capture Card for new G5 with FCP Studio!

Posted by Rob Sankey on June 3, 2005 at 3:52 pm

I need help. I am somewhat of a “neebie” with all this capture card talk. I just purchased a dual 2.7 G5 with 4 GB of RAM with Tiger and FCP Studio and I’m looking into buying either a aja card or blackmagic. I will basically be digitizing and laying back to beta sp and digi-beta. I doubt I’ll be working in HD, but if I can afford it that may be an option. I have read several articles and looked at many websites for advice but I still need some advice and some pros and cons of each of the products.
    Thanks in advance,
    RS

buy the AJA I/O, not the Kona 2. Buy the Kona 2 when you do HD.
    You will be much happier.

If you want Analog / Digital I/O now with the capability to do HD at any time, I’d look at the Kona 2 with the Io LA combination. Kona 2 gives you Digital Inputs & Outputs, SD/HD capability on-board, Component & Composite video outputs, and Unbalanced analog outputs (with the K-Box). The Io LA adds full analog input / output capabilities.

Of course, if you have a DigiBeta deck with analog playback, then you don’t even need the Io LA since you can playback / capture via SDI. I have a Sony J3/902 so I capture BetaSP via SDI, but then lay-back to SP via the Component outputs on the Kona 2.

If only everyone would follow Walter’s lead, and buy the damn Sony J3/902.
This would resolve so many issues and questions. It is a teriffic VTR, plays back the beta tapes, handles the embedded audio.

But of course, we will see this question over and over again in the near future, along with “why do I need a black generator”.

It definitely was a tough decision to make that initial purchase (almost $12k) but it’s just a great workhorse and take away all the need for any analog inputs on my system. Probably the best purchase I’ve made for the company, next to the K2 of course.

Why to feed your 1200A of course! 🙂

I am looking into buying the Kona 2 but I just noticed that the Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro Dual Link offfers about the same and is a little less expensive than the Kona 2. Does one product integrate with FCP a little better than the other?

AJA is the only official apple FCP 5 parter. it works awesome with FCP 5.

the hardware up and hardware down convert as well as their 3 year warranty are easily worth the cost of admission!

Thank you. I think you just tipped the scale in favor of the Kona 2. Support for products and partnerships are extremely important as I’m sure you know. I’m buying it today.
    Thanks for all your help.
