  • ADVC100 and LaCie Drives – maximum limit?

Posted by Al Sinclair on July 15, 2005 at 9:07 am

    Hi there,

I’ve been using the Canopus ADVC100 for almost a year now, with either one or two Lacie Drives chained to each other. As soon as I add a third drive, however, I hit all sorts of problems – either the drives dismount themselves, or the ADVC becomes jerky in FCP.

Is there a maximum chain length for the Lacie drives? (I was led to believe you could chain your heart out).

I’ve tried all sorts of connection combinations (using the 400 and 800 ports), but the result is always the same – I have to lose the ADVC or one of the drives for things to work OK.

I borrowed a belkin firewire hub for a short while, and still couldn’t get them all talking to each other.

    Any ideas?

Would a firewire PCI card help?

    Thanks in advance!

    Al

    …well that’s positive, then!

So are firewire drives simply not happy when they’re chained?

In theory you can daisy chain 64 Firewire devices together. In reality, 2 or 3 is realistic. I can sometimes get 3 drives to daisy chain to at least move media around, but it doesn’t work well to try and edit this way.

PCI card just works better with more drives. You should be able to run 2 or 3 drives with no issues off the card. the card we have here has 3 FW800 ports.
