  • Adrenaline & SONY DVW-A500 – digitizing a 90 min. large PAL BETACAM SP tape?

    Hello

this is my first post to this forum so I hope this works : )
I am looking to get some advice on digitizing a PAL BETACAM SP tape onto an Avid Adrenaline – ultimately to then encode using Compressor for DVD (both NTSC & PAL)

I need to digitize a 90 minute BETACAM SP tape onto the Avid Adrenaline at my job and plan to do so after regular work hours. I have only ever done NTSC inputs and outputs and the deck which we use is the SONY DVW-A500.

The Senior editor has a pretty busy schedule during the day but is ok with me doing this personal project after hours – I just want to make sure i set it all up properly and that I reset the Avid and the deck back to the way he had it.

I have never done anything PAL or BETASP on this deck and Avid Adrenaline so I am hoping you guys can tell me everything I need to know about setting up the deck and the avid to do this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Hi,

The DVW-A500 is setup to playback analog and digital betacam tapes but usually only one flavor – either PAL or NTSC. If you’ve got a PAL tape you will need something that plays back PAL like a J3 or JH3. You will also need PAL sync running to both the Adrenaline and the deck.

You cannot use Compressor standards convert (at least to my knowledge). Compressor will compress both PAL and NTSC but not convert – for that you need a standards converter like Terranex. There are some workarounds to create a poor man’s standards converter using something like AE but the results are not stellar.

If your Senior Editor says that the A500 will handle both PAL and NTSC then, you must have some additional card to make that happen. But I believe that Sony sells either one flavor or the other…
