December 4, 2011 at 3:00 pmCS4 is the problem. It’s a dysfunctional program that does not operate correctly, even with all of the updates. I bit the bullet & upgraded to CS5.5, and there are no playback problems whatsoever. CS4 was simply a dud & waste of money.

January 30, 2012 at 3:47 amI had the same problem. I have CS3 and a dedicated machine so I know it was internal. I had added a firewire connection (PCI) to use a new compatible capture device.
I found it had to do with the device control. As of late I do not use machine control. If machine control is “on” the timeline will not play (other than audio as someone stated). I have to either unplug the firewire RCA capture device input or turn off machine control.
Hope this helps.

April 11, 2012 at 2:50 pmHi guys,
I have read through all the above posts as I am a beginner to editing and have had the same problem with CS3 on a dedicated work PC. I captured successfully a whole amateur feature film then, when I went back to do a rough cut and went to play back scenes to select the ones I wanted, they played for a second of visuals then stopped while the audio continued. I am NOT technical at all and so got confused by all the above. In the end, I went to EDIT/PREFERENCES/DEVICE CONTROL and selected NONE. Problem fixed!!
