    Martin, I wouldnt give up, Its a real hard learning curve, I have spent weeks, learning, and even to day about lower field order or higher, I am in the UK so setting are Pal, but seems most the settings are Not only Hidden, you have to go look, but are set to NTSC, would also explain some of the issues I have had.

    Anyway, Hours are mounting up, but i am getting there.
    I have loads of hard drives and set the scratch disks, This has helped, and turned everything else off.

    Anyway, I may have not done it correctly, on the top toolbar “Sequence” I hit “render Effects in work area”
    It didnt take long, said it was proccessing my clips and audio,
    And Now IT PLAYS perfectly!! 50% on CPU, and it looks crystal clear, no problems what so ever now, so maybe this will help everyone, can but hope. I still dont know what i am doing in PP CS4 but this has worked what ever it did.
    All the best
    Andrew

    I was having trouble getting video out of my machine to a dv tape and others talked about the control being the problem. I turned off the start record on device (or it says something like that) at the top of the out to tape menu. Find the camera or whatever device you are using record and start manually and then hit ok on out to tape and for me everything played fine after that. No freezing or the video going away.

    Hello together.

    I experience the same trouble at the moment. After following this thread and heaving done all the tips included to hopefully solve the problem I found that changing the playback-options in the sequence-settings helped. But just in one case (a XD Cam project). Another one (DV PAL with mpeg-footage) still does not run (just sound, no picture). The code detective app found several codecs broken, but they stay broken, even if I re-install Adobe CS4 and uninstall every other video-device. Only thing I added after the last time when it worked perfectly fine are some Codecs like AVIDs DNxHD.
    I work on a Dell Precision with a Matrox rt.X2 card and external RAID 5 eSATA HD.
    Maybe one day there will be an answer to this issue ….

    All the best,
    Tobias

    Ok, so i was having this same issue, captured footage (mine = p2/.mxf) was imported and dropped into timeline, audio would play in the reference monitor but the video would not.

    I believe i may have a solution that will hopefully help some others out there.

    1. Start>> RUN>> Open: msconfig

    2. Services Tab>> check “Hide all Microsoft services”(VERY IMPORTANT)

    3. Click “Disable All” (uncheck’s all service boxes)

    4. Save all open files if needed and restart your computer

    5. Open your project once again and click play button in the reference monitor “your video should play” Hooray!

    6. Now the tedious part… you will have to go back into the “Services tab” from the “System Configuration Utility” and one by one check and APPLY those Services, then test your playback again to see it is disabled.

    Ultimately you will do this tedious part(6.) to find the root service that is affecting your play back

    I really hope this helps it worked for me. Besides this i can offer no other help on this problem. Really there could be a 1,000 causes for this problem from out of date graphics card drivers to improper project vs footage settings. Cheers!

    I had a similar issue just 10 mins ago. playback was working fine, video and audio. then I I reopened the same file, that’s when I couldn’t playback anything at all! not even audio. rendering didn’t help either. of course I could scrub through, but didn’t playback.

    but then I also noticed that the sound card (EMU 1820m is what I have) wasn’t responding which happens once in a while, so I reloaded the correct settings for the sound card, and went to youtube to check the audio output. the audio came back and all the fancy Windows sounds came back as well. then I fired up the premiere file again to see if that helped at all. and booom! it’s working now!

    so if anyone is still having issues, I’d check all the hardware settings and make sure your PC is working properly before you open the premiere files. there might be a compatibility issues with your sound card / video card / what have you. you should be able to switch between the built-in sound card and a high end one if available, and see which one works better in premiere. in my case, Emu output causes the playback to stutter, but not with the built-in el cheapo. go figure, eh? I thought it’d be the other way around.

    Hi all,

    I am having the exact same problem on a BRAND NEW iMac – fresh clean install of the Production premium suite. I only have the OS and this suite installed!!! There have been some tips for fixing on a PC, however has anyone had the same problem on a Mac?

    when I try to preview or render the timeline, I get about a second (sometime a whopping 2 sec) before it stops. For me it plays for a bit and stops video AND sound. I haven’t installed any codecs yet, no games, no software. All I have done is install the Premiere software and capture my clips using premiere.

    I have tried to play the clips outside of Premiere and they all play correctly. Is there any fix patch or tips that anyone can suggest in a way to resurrect this issue!

    PLEASE HELP!

    Thanks in advance all!

    I am having this same issue. Nothing will playback in the reference screen. I did not install anything onto my computer and I was continuing on the same project when it stopped working. It just stays on the current frame.

    I noticed that in my reference window now, the play button is gone. WTF!? I’ve tried messing with the playback settings but I can’t get it to reappear. The only way I can get whatever is in the time line to play is by pressing spacebar, but it only plays the audio.

    I assume that whatever made my play button disappear is also making my video not playback. Any ideas?

    Make sure you update to the latest version!! ADOBE AUTO UPDATER WILL NOT DO THIS. Use these links:

    Mac: https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=98&platform=Macintosh
    PC: https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=98&platform=Windows

    I had a nightmare for a while after upgrading and reinstalling osx where all AVCHD projects that had been fine stopped playing pack and crashing premiere. Upgrading CS4 to 4.2.1 seemed to fix this :).

    Hi.

    After trying A LOT of things finally i figured out this annoying problem.

    It’s a permission issues.

    1. Remove ALL preferences from Adobe CS4/CS5;
    2. Enable Root login (https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528);
    3. Open Adobe Premiere as root user;
    4. Open Adobe Premiere with your user;

    Should works fine now 😉

    I am having the same problem. I bought a laptop a few moths ago & had this issue, but I figured the computer just wasn’t up to task. I just had a computer built exclusively for video production, and it doesn’t work on this one either. The audio plays, but all I get is a still shot in the monitor view. Has anyone had success with any of the suggestions on here? I do not have any games at all on this computer.
