Adobe Premiere improperly importing drone footage
I recently updated to the new Premiere 2020 version and ever since I’ve been having issues with some of our 4k drone footage. For some reason it will stall and play the video as a still frame. Since the footage was recorded in HEVC and .MOV I read that Premiere can have a tough time on clips with both of those options.
I renamed the footage to a .mp4 as recommended by a few troubleshooting articles and now its downsampling the footage from 4k to 720p!
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be going wrong and how to fix this? I was working on the same episode a week ago prior to the update and it was fine??
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don’t want to edit with any raw drone footage. Transcode all drone footage to an edit friendly codec- i.e., Cineform.

Premiere shouldn’t have any trouble with an .mov file, that’s just the Quicktime wrapper that contains the HEVC (H.265) codec. Like Greg mentioned, the HEVC (H.265) is not an edit friendly codec so it’s very taxing on your system, meaning you need a powerful workstation to handle the footage natively. If you’re system can’t handle it, the best thing you can do is either transcode to an edit friendly codec like Greg suggested (Cineform, ProRes, DNX) or to go with a proxy workflow and link back to the original codec once you’re edit is done.
