Adobe Premiere CS4 is ALWAYS crashing!
I have an I-7 with 64-bit windows vista, 6 gb of RAM, 1TB hard drive. I am having endless problems with Adobe Premiere crashing. I am working on an hour long project at the moment and I have been unable to work out the conditions that make it crash. Sometimes it is when I am scrolling through the timeline, working with TIFFs or .MOV files, although the majority of my footage has been created using the export process from mini DV. Furthermore, I am now experiencing problems exporting my project using Adobe Encoder – the program keeps hanging. I am going insane. Please help!

I have 2 I7, rarely seen a crash, if ever.
Is this a clean install? Any anti virus, etc.?
How many hard drives?

On the media encoder…make sure you use the fly-out menu on the right side of the encoder settings dialog and uncheck the use XML option…processing the metadata from every clip in the timeline adds considerable processing time on the front end and it can appear that the app hangs.
What sort of .movs are you using?
I’ve edited QT ProRes projects on my WXP laptop in CS4..no crashes, so I know it isn’t QT itself.
…though I would check the minimum QT version requirements for CS4 and verify that you have that version.
Does it hang at a certain point in the timeline?
I know that PPro has traditionally been really poor zt handling lots of JPEGs on the timeline…I wonder if lots of TIFs are an issue? I’d put the TIFs in a different directory on your harddrive so the project can’t find them, and then leave them offline and see if the project behaves with just the .mov files…

Yes, it is a clean install. I only have one hard drive, (1 TB) – this also has my OS and all my program files on it.

I am not sure what sort of .MOVs they are; they are taken from a Lumix 12 Mega Pixel digital camera, but they are certainly QT files as they didn’t work in Ppro cs4 until I had got the update for QT movies. Interstingly, I have just switched to cs4, having used Ppro 2 prior to this, which had no problem with this type of file.I deleted the MOVs from my project (made a special features reel for my DVD!) and was able to export more easily from Ppro cs4, although it did crash once with an error message that read “ImportProcessServer.exe has stopped working”… sounds serious! I had to reboot the computer in order to get the program working again – after this it kept crashing whilst loading in media.
