I need some very basic help with editing my footage in adobe premiere pro.

    I am shooting on a Canon 60D with 1920×1080 24fps.

The trouble I have been running into is getting the video to export properly. I have changed many settings around and I have only been able to get on to come out in full HD and not choppy, however it was not in widescreen like i would like. When i changed the export dimensions things went back to poor quality.

For my very simple question: What should I be shooting in on my 60D? 1920×1080 24 fps or 30fps? And What should i use for project settings when i open the new project and what should I use for export settings? I do not care if they are .MOV or .Mp4 files when exported. Please be as specific as possible when giving settings and thank you so much for any help, I could use it to help ease my frustrations.

What format and frame rate you shoot depends on what you want your specific project to look like. As far as sequence, I’d probably use the custom setting (“Desktop”) and just select the footage type you shot on.

It’s too bad you don’t have CS5 as it has a specific presets for DSLR footage and it’s optimized for working with native DSLR footage. CS4 is not. You might be better off using NeoScene from Cineform in order to convert the files to .avi or .mov files. That will probably give you better performance.

That does not help with what I am asking. I understand frame rate and the speed that will come from using 24 or 30. Here is my question restated: what project file settings should I use an then export in so that my video is in widescreen at 1920×1080 Full HD quality. I have been troubleshooting for some time with various settings to try and get this export proper. Square Pixels? Size adjustments? Progressive scan? h.264? .mov or .mp4? Anything else that is included that may be set wrong and producing poor quality?

    Thanks

Depends on what you’ll be exporting for. Most likely, export using the same frame rate as the footage, Square Pixel, 1920x1080p, a bitrate of 4.5MB average and 5.5 should be sufficient but you can go a lot higher than that if you like. If your footage was originally progressive, go with progressive, and use the h.264 wrapper. That should give you good results. I export most of my 1080p24 footage that way.

I am running Premeire Pro CS5 but I am having the same problem. I don’t have an option to make my sequence 1920×1080. My preview monitor shows the video perfectly but my Edit monitor is all cropped. Please help.

In CS5 and CS5.5 you can drag and drop (DnD) a clip over the “New Item” Icon at the bottom of the project panel (it looks like a little page with the top left corner folded over).

PPro will make a sequence that matches the clip you DnD.

CS4, still requires the manual use of finding the correct matching sequence settings for the clip.
