In the small company I work for, I am the only person that works with video and media. I am able to use the COW and other resources to keep in touch keep up with the industry. But I am now looking into going to some conferences to learn different approaches, new technology, and new strategies that will help my company. Adobe MAX was one I was looking at since, I work in the Creative Suite quite a bit. What has been people experience with this conference? What other conference could be beneficial?

What is the COW community’s thoughts?

My focus is video production, but I also deal with photography, web design, and media deployed through the web. Your thoughts on conferences with these kind of focuses would be appreciated.

I can’t speak for Adobe MAX, since I’ve never been, but I’m a regular attendee at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, and I seriously consider it some of the most well spent money that we spend. I can’t imagine that Adobe MAX wouldn’t be at least as useful, especially for an ‘Adobe-centric’ production house. I’ve been meaning to add it to my agenda.

Early on, the DV industry was advancing at a race car pace, and without attending such conferences you could easily have been run over by it. In recent years the technology has settled to a less frantic pace, but I still find conferences like NAB Show invaluable. Even if you bypass the classroom instruction available, you can learn quite a bit simply sitting through the Adobe Evangelists’ presentations. Plus, you can discuss things with them one-on-one.

I really don’t know that much about NAB, other than that it is where everybody announces their newest flashiest technologies. Is NAB more geared towards larger content producers? or is there good stuff for small one man/two man band operations? or am I reading too much into the name.

NAB covers the spectrum. More or less all vendors in the film/video/radio/audio world are there. We’re a very small corporate production company, two of us with a few freelancers, and NAB covers what we do quite nicely. However, NAB can be serious sensory overload.

This is the first year Adobe MAX will have video courses and breakouts. In the past, it’s been pretty focused on web technologies. I hope it will be great, but for now, NAB is where you want to be.

Your impression of NAB is probably what you’ve heard about the massive show floors, bursting with new technology. Actually, where you ought to be is Post Production World at NAB. There you can take classes about new workflows regarding the tools you use. You can also connect with other editors and get their take on things. If you go, I’ll see you there!

    Hi John,
Sorry! I guess I spoke too soon. This year is actually going to be awesome for video professionals at Adobe MAX. With the advent of the Creative Cloud, we’re going to see new emphasis on some great video breakouts, networking opportunities, and more. I see that there are going to be some top instructors for video products like After Effects and Premiere Pro there, as well. Consider going to MAX this year. I am.

In my experience, MAX has been especially good for showing how video integrates with other technologies—such as how video integrates with the web, with Flash, etc.

For example, a few years ago, Michael Coleman did the best presentation that I’ve ever seen on how to use motion tracking and metadata in After Effects and Flash to make video that reacted to data dynamically.

NAB may be more focused on broadcast (that is the ‘B’ in ‘NAB’), but MAX is an excellent venue for a lot of video subjects. We plan to have en especially strong After Effects presence there this year.
