admin access for finalcut studio
I work in education, and we are in the early stages of converting all classes into server-based environments…and, that includes the elimination of our having admin access to systems. Not root admin, just admin to log in and fix day to day issues that come up. My lab runs Photoshop, with all related printing and scanning, and animation software (flash, fireworks, animation master)….along with finalcutproHd……
We have had admin passwords all along; but now are controlled remotely by the system engineer, who is not always available. We can run Remote Access; but, can’t change anything (no admin password)….
Could someone addresss the many issues that come up daily that could be addressed without sacrificing any security issues?…….things like running permissions, and weekly disk maintenance?…..
Root admin still trumps us, so, is there any reason NOT to have admin access?…….
it’s been very difficult to actually run the lab without this……

Sometimes the IT systems folks go overboard with their “security” initiatives. I think you need to sit down with them and explain your needs. It seems that unless they can guarantee immediate support throughout the time you need it, then you should have an admin password.
There’s a fine line between “locking away” all of the tools so they’re safe and using those tools to create what you want.

well, that has been done….stating needs. Specifically, I find that being unable to reset permissions and do disk mainenance has been very problematic. Is there any way I could screw up things at root admin level?…
I don’t think so….it’s only local admin access…….
