I have a Mac Gurus Burly box with 4 SATA drives and a Sonet Tempo 4X4 card. Can I ad 3-4 additional drives (internally with G5 jam) to the raid without formating? Or am I stuck moving the footage off the drives, adding the new drives and reformating the whole raid again?

Any input to this would be appreciated, as I have to make a decision by monday to build this for a long form project.

You could build a seperate raid with the new drives and leave the current one as it is. Otherwise you’ll have to move your footage off the current raid before building a new one with all the drives.

modern high-end RAID controllers have a feature called online capacity expansion (OCE) …. that sounds like what you’d like to do. unfortunately, the Sonnet card isn’t a RAID controller, just an SATA host bus adapter (HBA) and so doesn’t have this feature.

I think Guy’s suggestion is your best bet, unless you want/need for your media drive to appear as a single volume. If thats the case then you’ll have to backup, rebuild and restore.

    Hope it helps

Thank you both for your input. I’ve decided to back up my material to an external drive(s) and then add drives to the raid and reformat. Figure I am taking two steps here, but I also get back up my material for archiving.
