Adding an animated bug in Avid Xpress Pro
Hi,
I’m trying to add an animated bug into an hour programing all the way through into my Avid Xpress Pro sequence. What I have been doing is taking the five minute avi file and importing it and then keying out the red that is behind the bug. The problem with this is I have to keep pluging the clip in every five minutes and then adding a new chroma key which takes forever for my machine to render. My boss says that there is an easier way to do this and other editors in the past just used some sort of roller (I’m guessing in trim mode) and were able to drag the clip across the entire hour, but I’m not able to do it. If anyone has any idea of an easier way I could do this that would be great because right now most of my time is spent rendering.Thanks!

Unless you have an hour avi file, you’ll have to continue to add the key. You could reneder the first one, then cut and paste it down the timeline. It should keep the render. Or, you could do a mixdown of just your keyed avi (I think that will work). Or render it in AE and import it as a key…

It will keep the render, but because Avid renders from the Top on Down, it will recognize the render only for the video that’s underneath it. If you paste it over video that’s even 1 frame different you’ll have to rerender.
Mixing down will destroy the alpha, so that won’t work.
What resolution are you working at? Depending on your system, you should be able to play at least 1 alpha stream in realtime. If you have multiple effects you’ll have to either render those, or render your animated bug. If you’re on an Xpress system and you’re working in 1:1 you’ll have to render regardless, because it will allow only 1 stream of 1:1, and an animated alpha is 2 streams (1:1 for the matte, 1:1 for the fill). Your best bet is to lay it over and over, then set it to render at night.
