Adding a mask
Last year I shot a documentary in DV which I am now getting ready to edit in Xpress.
Even if the screen-ratio I shot with was 4:3, thinking of TV channels that might not want 16:9, I did use a trick to get both and still be safe. What I did was add translucid tape over the view-screen to limit my safe area and compose around it. The semi-transparent tape would allow me seeing any unwanted things that shouldn’t come up even on a 4:3 version.
I can’t say this worked 100% of the time, but I’d say it was good for about 95% or so. Sometimes the eye “sees through” the tape, particularly on the upper side, and unconsciously frames for the 4:3.
If that wasn’t the case, I would simply leave the cropping for the final copy. As it is I have to check every shot I edit in to see if it “fits” the 16:9 frame without adding the actual crop using Avid internal effects.
Which would be the best way to do so?
Let’s hope I am explaining what I want correctly.
